Celebrating Black Excellence and Resilience at the Fifteen Percent Pledge Gala

Tina Knowles honored during annual Fifteen Percent Pledge gala, Meghan Markle attendsIn a time of uncertainty, when major retailers are scaling back their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) commitments, it's more crucial than ever to celebrate and support Black-owned businesses. The Fifteen Percent Pledge's annual gala, held at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles on February 7th, was a testament to the power of perseverance and innovation.

Honoring Trailblazers
The evening's highlight was the presentation of the Trailblazer Award to Tina Knowles, a 72-year-old businesswoman, fashion designer, and philanthropist. Knowles' acceptance speech was a poignant reminder of the importance of tenacity and drive in overcoming obstacles. 'You have to have tenacity and drive and be a self-starter,' she said, reflecting on her own journey from running a hair salon in Texas to designing Destiny's Child's early costumes.

Celebrating Black Entrepreneurship
The Fifteen Percent Pledge has come a long way since its inception in 2020. Founded by Aurora James, the organization initially called on major retailers to dedicate at least 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses. Today, it supports over 10,000 entrepreneurs and offers grants, mentorship, retail partnerships, and educational programming. The gala was a celebration of this progress, with attendees including Meghan Markle, Kelly Rowland, Danessa Myricks, and many more.

A Call to Action
Despite the challenges faced by Black-owned businesses, the Fifteen Percent Pledge remains committed to its mission. 'The push for equity on store shelves and in commerce isn't going anywhere,' said James ahead of the event. 'It's not charity; it's about making sure consumers have access to what they actually need.' The organization's AI training initiative is a testament to this commitment, aimed at ensuring Black founders are not left behind as technology continues to reshape commerce.

The Fifteen Percent Pledge gala was more than just an event – it was a celebration of Black excellence and resilience. As we move forward in these uncertain times, it's essential to continue supporting initiatives like the Fifteen Percent Pledge, which are dedicated to promoting equity and inclusion in commerce.
