ICE Agents on Leave for Lying Under Oath in Minneapolis Shooting Investigation
Two ICE Agents Accused of Lying Under Oath
According to an internal investigation, two federal agents made untruthful statements under oath regarding the mid-January shooting of a Venezuelan national in Minneapolis. The incident occurred near North Sixth Street and North 24th Avenue, where an ICE officer shot Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg. Video evidence has revealed that the sworn testimony provided by the two officers appears to have been fabricated.
Dueling Narratives Emerge After Shooting
In the hours following the shooting, two conflicting accounts emerged. Cellphone video shared by Democratic state Sen. Erin Maye Quade shows a woman calling 911 shortly after the incident, claiming that her husband was chased by ICE agents before being shot in front of his family. However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initially stated that Sosa-Celis fled and crashed into a parked car, then tried to flee on foot, prompting the officer to fire a defensive shot.
Government's Account Changes Amid New Evidence
The government's narrative has since changed, with an affidavit supporting charges against Alfredo Alejandro Aljorna and Sosa-Celis stating that Aljorna fled the scene in a car. The FBI alleged that Sosa-Celis was the one who initially struck the ICE officer with a broom stick while trying to arrest Aljorna. However, video surveillance evidence has revealed inconsistencies between the government's claims and what actually occurred.
ICE Acting Head Responds to Incident
In response to the incident, Todd Lyons, the acting head of ICE, stated that lying under oath is a serious federal offense. He emphasized that the men and women of ICE are entrusted with upholding the rule of law and that violations of this sacred sworn oath will not be tolerated. After the internal investigation, the two officers could face termination of employment.
The incident has raised concerns about the integrity of law enforcement agencies and the need for transparency in investigations. As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen what consequences the two ICE agents will face for their alleged actions. One thing is certain: the public's trust in law enforcement must be earned and maintained through accountability and honesty.
