When do we face this reality And what is the value gap ? The value gap is principally the belief that white people matter more in this country than others, and until we understand that, until we wrap our minds around that. And I say this as someone who look, I'm a country boy who's made it be a teach at Princeton. I got an endowed chair, I drive a nice car, got nice suit, right ? But I still want to hold the view that the value gap continues to distort and disfigure democracy in this country, like we'd like with the phrase White supremacy conjures up images of bad men in hooded robes who believe in white power, burning crosses and screaming the word nigga. Alright, but that's not quite what I mean by that phrase, right ? On a broader level, white supremacy involves the way a society organizes itself and what and whom it chooses to value. Apartheid. In South Africa, the Jim Crow South and Nazi Germany are clear examples of societies organized by white supremacy, And in each case, the belief that white people are valued more than nonwhite people shaped every aspect of social and political life. Determined where you live, which schools you attended and what jobs were available to you, and reminded you daily, all of your status and station in life. And that's what white supremacy is. Without all the bluster it is a set of practices informed by the fundamental belief that white people are valued more than others. Now in no way do we live in a society like Nazi Germany or apartheid South Africa. But we do live in a country where everyday black P. Apple confront the damning reality that we are less value. What does it mean for those kids ? I went to Ferguson. Y'all, all right ? I went to Ferguson to interview those kids and I went to the Canfield apartments can feel part. And if you've interviewed been an apartment complex and you've seen the roads that go through them, you don't have why they are. Literally, you could where you're sitting, the back door of somebody's house. And that's where Michael Brown's body was with bullets in his head. So imagine seven year olds, eight year old, six year olds walking around that neighbourhood with that body there. We'd talk about that happening in Haiti. That's a community being terrorized. No matter what you think about what Michael Brown did, What does that mean ? What does it say ? We know the date is very clear. African - Americans suffer chronic double digit unemployment. We lead the nation in rates of heart disease, cancer, H. I. V. AIDS, Nearly one million of the two point four million Americans in prison are black. When we think about the differences between white and blacks in high school and college and graduation rates and mortality rates and access to health care and levels of wealth in salary differences with comparable education in childhood poverty rates. We can see that in this country, white people, particularly those with money, matter more than others. And what's more, it has been this way since the day the country was founded, So I called it the value gap share. Believe inspire blacks be.
