MY HUSBBAND ALWAYS SAYS TO ME THAT A WIFE IS NOT FAMILY JUST A WIFE UNTIL SOMETHING HAPPENED....PART 7

Henry never stopped apologising.
Every single day, from morning till night, he kept apologising to me.
His voice was always soft, broken, shaky… like someone who finally realized the weight of everything he had done. He apologised so much that even the walls of the house seemed tired of hearing “I’m sorry, Blessing… please forgive me.”

He kept telling me he was genuinely sorry.
That he finally understood.
That he had now seen his family for who they truly were.

One morning, after listening to another round of apologies, I sat down quietly and took a deep breath. I looked at him, really looked at him...the man who once believed I was beneath him, the man who once said I wasn’t family.

This time, my voice was calm but sharp.

"I have conditions," I said. "Before I forgive everything you did. But not actually forget… because life is not Nollywood."

Henry swallowed hard.
“Anything… anything you say, I’ll do. I’m ready to atone for all I did to you,” he said that morning, sitting in his wheelchair and struggling to hold his tears.

I didn’t even reply immediately.
I just stood up, walked quietly to the cupboard, opened it, and brought out all his original documents...the ones his mother and siblings stole fake versions of.

When he saw them in my hands, his eyes widened.

I dropped them on the bed and folded my arms.

"Call your lawyer immediately," I said.
“Henry, I want you to change the names in these documents to mine only. Not even your name should be there. Call your lawyer to come now, that you have some changes to make.”

My voice carried a firmness he wasn’t used to.

"You… Blessing, how did you get hold of… wait… don’t tell me the ones my mum and siblings are with… are fakeeee?” he asked, shocked, panicking, staring at the documents as if they were bombs.

"Yes. It’s what it is,” I replied. “You’ll either sign them, or I burn them and leave with my children. You can’t stop me, Henry. You’re not even a complete man right now. So just call your lawyer.”

His mouth fell open.
He picked up his phone, dialled the number halfway, then dropped it again.

I inhaled deeply.
This man better not try me.
If he pushed me too far, I would happily burn those documents and leave.

"But what if my family see the lawyer coming inside and decide to know what’s going on?" he asked, still holding the phone with trembling fingers.

I laughed—slow, sarcastic, amused.

"Who will tell them? You?" I asked.
“And are they going to barge into my bedroom? They know better than to come in here because I will deal with each one of them… including your mother. I am no longer scared of them. So call the lawyer already.”

I yelled the last part.

"Okay," he said quickly and dialled the lawyer’s number, telling him to come to the house immediately.

Minutes later, I started hearing noise from downstairs. Voices rising. Chairs shifting. Tension.

I went downstairs quietly.

I saw the lawyer at the door with Henry’s mother blocking him like a bouncer. Her wrapper was tied aggressively. Her facial expression alone could start a civil war.

“You will not leave here unless you say what you’re here for!” Henry’s mother yelled, pressing her chest forward.

“Ma, please… I don’t answer to you. Henry called me here. Can you let me pass?” lawyer Philip said, adjusting his glasses politely.

I cleared my throat loudly.

Everything went still.

They both turned and faced me.

Philip immediately greeted.

“Good day, Mrs. Henry.”

“Welcome,” I said. “Please come with me. My husband is waiting.”

I ignored my mother-in-law completely.

“He will not move an inch unless I say so!” she snapped, staring at me with angry red eyes.

I walked closer.

“See ehn… if you do not let him pass, I will push you down and I will not be sorry,” I said, my voice dangerously calm. “So you better move. Now.”

She blinked rapidly.
Her feet shifted.
She moved.

The lawyer followed me upstairs.

I locked the door behind us.

All the paperwork was done.

Every signature.
Every stamp.
Every page flipped.
Every line changed.

I signed.
Henry signed.

And just like that…

I became the sole owner of all the properties.
Everything.
Even the house everyone was living in.

I walked to Henry, looked him in the eyes, and said softly:

"I forgive you."

His shoulders dropped in relief.

"I'll uhm… hire someone, a caregiver who will be taking care of you… when we leave," I added, standing up slowly. “I’m accepting you only because of the kids. That’s all. I’m not accepting you because I still love you or anything. It's because I want these kids to grow with a complete family.”

He nodded.
“Thank you,” he whispered.

I didn’t care.
I already planned my exit.

I had already arranged our stuff.
Our visas were ready.
Everything was set.

The buyer for the house came the next day.
Henry signed the house documents too.

I didn’t tell my mother-in-law anything.
I let them live comfortably.

They thought I had changed.
They saw the way I helped Henry… helped them… cooked for them… smiled with them…

Let them eat their last supper before they get evicted.

"Ehn, that's how a wife behaves," my mother-in-law said proudly one afternoon when she saw me helping Henry eat.

I smiled.

In my mind, I said: Eat well, mama… two days remaining.

Everything remained calm
Until the day the people moving into the house arrived.

They came in, well dressed, holding files and smiling politely.

"Welcome," I greeted them warmly. "I’m Mrs. Henry, and this is my husband," I said, pointing to Henry in the wheelchair.

Immediately, chaos broke loose.

“What’s going on here?” Henry’s mother shouted, running downstairs.
Gozie and Amaka rushed after her like goats chasing palm kernels.

“Well, mama… these are the new house owners. They now own this house and they’ll be moving in the next 2 days,” I said calmly.

They froze.

“Wait what? This is a joke, right?” Amaka asked.
“We have the original documents!” she screamed.

I smirked.

“Well, well, well… what you have are fake documents, which you can be arrested for,” I said. “So you people didn’t check the documents you took? How greedy. You all wanted to leave me with nothing, right? As if I’m nothing abi…?”

I shrugged.

"I won’t waste my time explaining shit to you people. When they come in the next two days and you people are still here… the police will escort you all out," I said with power in my voice.

“You! You, Blessing!” Henry’s mother screamed. “Since you came into this house, you just want to divide my family!”

The new house owners had already left, thank God.

I faced them fully.

“Well, I was nothing but a blessing—just like my name,” I said, pointing at each one of them. “But you all… you people were the cause of all these.”

“You said I’m not family, right? I’m just showing you what ‘non family’ does. This was your plan, abi? To sell the house and throw me and Henry out? You think I didn’t hear? I heard everything.”

Before I could react—

My mother-in-law slapped me.

The sound echoed.

I laughed.

She slapped me again.

“Yes mama! Teach her! Show her her place!” her children cheered her on.

Before she even raised her hand for the third slap…

I raised my own hand—
And I slapped her back.

Yes.
You heard me.

I slapped my mother-in-law back.

And I was not sorry.

She held her cheek and screamed like she was being roasted alive.

“Amadioha eeeeehhhhhh!” she shouted. “I can’t see anything! Amaka weeeeeh! My eye ooo! Why is everywhere greeeen?!”

Amaka ran to her.

“Mama stop na, it’s just this small slap she slapped you.”

Gozie shook his head.
“You people should calm down.”

Amaka hissed.

“Wait until Blessing slaps you… you’ll know her slap is not ordinary,” she said, rubbing the place I slapped her the other day.

I just laughed.

I turned and walked upstairs with peace in my soul.

Let them cry.

Let them roll on the floor.

Let everywhere be green and purple and rainbow.

I cannot wait for next tomorrow
When the police will escort them out
Like stray cats.

To be continued…

So sorry this came late...was busy
