Title: The Freedom Letters
Montgomery, Alabama, 1956 Twelve-year-old Lena Mae Carter lives in a world of "Whites Only" signs, back-of-the-bus rules, and quiet resistance. Her mother, a seamstress, works long hours sewing dresses for white women. Her father is a postal worker who dreams of a more just world for Lena and her younger brother, Isaiah.
When Rosa Parks is arrested and the Montgomery Bus Boycott begins, Lena starts writing secret letters to her future self letters filled with hope, anger, and questions: “Why do they hate us?” “When will we be free?”
One day, she discovers a hidden letter in the back of an old bookshelf in her school. It's from 1863 written by a girl named Aba, who escaped slavery during the Civil War and found refuge with the help of the Underground Railroad. As Lena reads Aba’s words, a mysterious connection forms across time.
Inspired, Lena begins writing back — and through her letters, she finds her voice. She becomes a young activist, organizing a student walkout and leading chants at her first protest. Her letters are not just for herself anymore they are for every girl who ever had to sit at the back of the room, stay quiet, or be brave when no one else would.
