Super Eagles Resume Training After Bonus Dispute Resolved Ahead of World Cup Playoff

Rabat, Morocco — The Nigerian senior national football team, the Super Eagles, have resumed full training in Rabat, Morocco, following a brief but disruptive boycott over a long-standing dispute regarding unpaid bonuses and allowances.

The players and officials had refused to train on Tuesday, November 11, in protest of outstanding payments from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), with some debts reportedly dating back as far as 2019. The team is currently in camp preparing for a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup African Playoff semi-final clash against Gabon on Thursday.

🤝 Resolution Reached with NFF

The standoff was reportedly resolved late on Tuesday/early Wednesday after swift negotiations between the players' leadership, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and representatives from the National Sports Commission (NSC).

Team captain William Troost-Ekong confirmed the resolution via a statement on his official X account:

"ISSUE RESOLVED. Outstanding financials cleared and on the ground. Team is UNITED and focused as before on representing NIGERIA with our maximum for the games ahead!”

The settlement ensures that the Super Eagles can now focus entirely on their crucial World Cup fixture. The team's media officer announced that the squad would resume training sessions on Wednesday evening.

💰 Dispute Over Backlog and Future Payments

The core of the dispute was not just about match bonuses for the current play-off campaign but centered on outstanding allowances and bonuses accrued from previous tournaments, including qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

While the NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, denied claims of owing the team for 30 matches, he confirmed that a compromise had been reached with the team's leaders. The resolution reportedly involved the immediate disbursement of funds, though the exact details of the final agreement regarding the long-term debt and the payment structure for the current play-offs have not been made public.

The resolution allows the team to refocus on Thursday's must-win semi-final against Gabon, with the winner advancing to face either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo for a place in the intercontinental play-offs.
