Buratai: Wike's Clash with Naval Officer is a 'Clear and Present Danger to National Security'

Abuja, Nigeria — Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (retd.), has issued a strong condemnation of the conduct of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, following a heated public confrontation with a Nigerian Navy officer in Abuja on Tuesday.

Buratai warned that the minister's actions “transcend mere misconduct” and pose a “clear and present danger to national security,”calling for immediate and decisive action from President Bola Tinubu.

💥 The Clash and Buratai's Reaction

The controversy stems from an incident at an alleged illegal construction site in the Gaduwa District of Abuja. Minister Wike, during an enforcement exercise, publicly confronted a naval officer who was guarding the property on the instruction of a former Chief of Naval Staff. In a widely circulated video, Wike was seen expressing outrage at the officer's presence, insisting that no individual, military or otherwise, was above the law.

In a statement released on his verified social media page on Tuesday, Buratai argued that the minister's tone and public rebuke of a uniformed officer was an act of profound indiscipline that “strikes at the core of our nation's command and control structure.”

The former Army Chief emphasized:  Undermining Authority: Wike’s verbal assault “deliberately undermines the authority of the Commander-in-Chief”(the President) and disrespects the entire Armed Forces.  Eroding Discipline: Such actions grievously “wound the morale” of serving personnel and erode the foundation of discipline upon which national security stands. Not Political Theatre: He warned that the incident must not be dismissed as political drama, describing it as a “reckless endangerment of national order.”

📢 Call for a Public Apology

Lieutenant General Buratai called on the FCT Minister to take immediate corrective action to repair the damage done to civil-military relations and the morale of the forces.

“Barrister Nyesom Wike must tender an immediate and unequivocal public apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Commander-in-Chief, to the Armed Forces of Nigeria, and to the specific officer whose honour was violated,” Buratai declared.

⚖️ Mixed Reactions: Defence of Wike's Authority

The incident has sparked a wide debate, with some legal and political figures defending the minister's position on land administration.

Legal Perspective: Legal experts have pointed out that no military regulation permits a serving officer to guard private property, suggesting the naval officer was acting unlawfully by obstructing a civilian authority (the FCT Minister, who acts on behalf of the President in land matters).

Minister'sAide: The Minister's Senior Special Assistant on Communications, Lere Olayinka, countered Buratai's argument, questioning why the former Army Chief was more concerned about a verbal exchange than the "misuse" of military personnel to guard private construction sites, arguing that this practice is the actual threat to national security.

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has since stated that the military is investigating the matter and assured that any officer performing a lawful duty would be protected.
