GFD takes part in Safeguarding Conference in Kenya

A five-day safeguarding conference was held in Kenya from April 13 to 17, 2026, to strengthen participants’ knowledge and capacity in safeguarding practice. The event brought together professionals from various organisations to deepen their understanding of safeguarding principles and their application across programmes. Gabriel Narh Tetteh represented the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD).

The training covered core safeguarding principles, with a strong focus on creating safe and inclusive environments, particularly for vulnerable groups. Participants also explored safeguarding in programming, learning how to embed protective measures into project design and implementation.

Sessions introduced key safeguarding tools and standard terminology to ensure a shared understanding of concepts. Practical exercises on risk assessment and mitigation equipped participants to identify potential risks and implement measures to prevent harm.

The conference also addressed reporting mechanisms and the barriers that often hinder disclosure. Discussions emphasised the need for accessible, confidential, and effective reporting systems, while examining challenges such as fear, stigma, and limited awareness.

Overall, the conference provided practical, relevant insights that strengthened participants’ ability to uphold safeguarding standards within their organisations and communities.
