💔 NEVER LET GO – Episode Six: “First Aid and First Impressions"

When Stanley took Ivy to his home, her mouth widened in silent awe as she stared at the mansion standing boldly before her. She could not believe her eyes the moment she stepped out of the car. Stanley quickly noticed her wonder and warned her not to act like an illiterate, yet Ivy could not stop looking around. It suddenly became clear to her why Stanley had once boasted that one of his toilets was good enough accommodation for her madam.

“Honestly, Ivy, if you continue looking around like a moron instead of following me inside, I might send you back to your madam. Don't be silly looking around like a monkey in need of a banana,” Stanley scolded.

Ivy apologized softly and hurried after him.

Stepping inside, Ivy saw even more captivating and sophisticated things. Everything looked expensive, polished, beyond anything she had ever imagined. Stanley’s mother had gone out before he returned, and Bianca and Nkechi had travelled to visit their childhood friend who had just come back from abroad some hours earlier.

Stanley asked Ivy to sit while he moved around the house to check if anyone was home. When he realized nobody else was around, he became stranded. He needed to return to work urgently and make use of the envelope in his possession. To keep Ivy occupied, he gave her a bottle of wine and slices of cake.

Ivy received them gratefully. Tasting such things felt like stepping into paradise. Nothing in her long years of hardship and misery had ever come close to such sweetness. She thanked Stanley repeatedly, overwhelmed by the unexpected kindness.

A few minutes later, Bianca and Nkechi returned home. The moment Stanley saw their car, relief crossed his face. He quickly grabbed his keys and headed out. As the sisters entered the living room, they greeted him, then stared at Ivy with a mixture of curiosity and confusion.

“I am leaving now. That girl over there is Ivy. She will be staying with us until I find a suitable place for her. In the meantime, get the first aid kit and treat her bruises,” Stanley said shortly before walking out.

Bianca and Nkechi exchanged bewildered looks and sat down. Ivy grew uncomfortable instantly and stopped eating her cake.

“Hi. Welcome to our house. Feel free. Eat as much as you want,” Bianca said gently.

But Nkechi kept staring at Ivy’s face, trying to recall something.

“Sis, her face looks familiar. She reminds me of something that happened before,” Nkechi murmured.

She leaned closer. “Have you ever been to Ebede market?”

“Yes ma,” Ivy answered.

“Have you ever helped someone who lost a phone? Or rather, a purse with important things inside?”

“Yes ma. The owner used a strange number to call and I told her to…”

“… come under the mango tree to retrieve it. That owner was me,” Nkechi said excitedly.

“You saved me that day. My school registration documents were in that purse. Someone else might have taken it and kept it forever. I am truly grateful.”

“It was nothing ma,” Ivy replied shyly.

“And please stop calling me ma. You are making me feel old. We are almost the same age,” Nkechi said, laughing as Bianca joined.

Bianca leaned forward. “So what really happened? How did you meet our arrogant and cruel brother?”

Ivy was not expecting the question and needed a moment to gather her thoughts.

“We met because of an accident, and then he took me to…”

“Hello bitches. I knew you two would not come outside to greet a long time friend,” an unexpected voice cut in sharply.

Bianca and Nkechi turned and instantly brightened.

“Judith!” they chorused.

Judith flipped her hair and sat down.

“But when did you come back? You travelled only last week,” Nkechi asked.

“Do not remind me of that disaster. I travelled because of a guy I thought I was dying for. When I got to my uncle’s place, I decided to visit him. Babes, guess what I saw. I caught him trying to seduce a ten year old girl. A ten years old oo! In fact, I nearly fainted. It was so disgusting,” Judith narrated dramatically.

Everyone burst into laughter except Ivy, who quietly stared at the floor.

"Look, as much as we're laughing at this, it's not really funny at all. Like didn't you people get him arrested or what? He could have been abusing the innocent little girl oo!" Nkechi pointed out matter of fact.

"Hmmm....na that one tire me pass. I threatened to report, to expose the shameless pig, but there was no evidence; especially when the so called 'innocent little girl' was saying that nothing was going on between them. She said he was her uncle. I was like, am I a kid? It was obvious that the girl was consenting to it or he was threatening her. Either way, I was helpless at the moment. I mean, what could I do when the suspected victim claims nothing was ongoing?" Judith said frantically but composed.

“This is nonsense. My ears have heard enough in this life,” Bianca said looking a bit worried.

“Well, that is exactly what Judith gets for rejecting Johnson who genuinely cared about her,” Nkechi joked.

“Forget Johnson. I even caught him being confronted by a girl he got pregnant. Men are a complete disaster. I think I should just focus on my studies,” Judith said hopelessly.

“Thank God someone is finally thinking straight. I just hope you mean it this time because you are not stable with decisions,” Bianca added.

Judith then looked at Ivy.

“Nkechi, who is this girl? I have never seen her here.”

“Ask her yourself,” Nkechi replied.

Ivy slowly rose to her feet. “Please, I want to go outside for a while.”

“Is it too hot in here?” Bianca asked.

“No. I just want to step out.”

“Do you want someone to follow you?”

“No, I will be fine,” Ivy said before quietly leaving.

As soon as she stepped out, Judith leaned in.

“What is wrong with her? Is she normal?” she asked inquisitively.

“She is just shy,” Bianca said.

“So who exactly is she?” Judith pressed.

“We do not know, Mrs Nossa. Our brother brought her home and did not say anything. We wanted to ask when you interrupted,” Bianca explained.

“Maybe she is his new girlfriend,” Judith suggested mischievously.

Both sisters burst into loud laughter.

“Impossible. Stanley only dates flashy, classy girls. Ivy can be anything but his girlfriend,” Bianca declared.

“You never know. She is actually beautiful, just poorly dressed. And her skin looks injured, almost like she has scars,” Judith said seriously.

“That is true. I even forgot that he told us to treat her wounds. She must be going through a lot. We will not know until we ask,” Nkechi said before calling Ivy back in to apply first aid.

After some time, Judith prepared to leave. Bianca walked her to the gate, and she entered a taxi.
