MY VIRGIN HOUSE BOY

Chapter Two: The Rule I Shouldn’t Have Broken

The first rule I made for myself was simple:
Do not get involved.

It wasn’t a rule written down or spoken out loud. It was the kind of rule grown women make silently, born from experience and regret. The kind that exists to keep things clean, controlled, and uncomplicated.

Daniel was my house boy.
I was his employer.

The line between us was clear. At least, it was supposed to be.

In the beginning, I kept my distance deliberately. I gave instructions from the doorway. I corrected him only when necessary. I avoided long conversations and ended eye contact quickly, not because he stared too long, but because he never did.

There was something unsettling about how careful he was.
How he waited to be spoken to.
How he stood when I spoke, as if sitting would be disrespectful.

One afternoon, I came home earlier than usual and found him struggling with the gas cooker. The flame kept going out, and frustration sat plainly on his face. It startled me — I had never seen him frustrated before.

I laughed without meaning to.

He looked up, startled, like a child caught doing something forbidden.

“I’m sorry, ma,” he said immediately. “I will fix it.”

There was no need for apology. None at all.

I should have walked away then.
That would have been the sensible thing.

Instead, I stepped closer.

I reached past him to adjust the knob, aware of how narrow the space between us suddenly felt. I could smell the soap he used — mild, unfamiliar. When our fingers brushed for barely a second, he froze.

Not with hunger.
Not with boldness.

With confusion.

That was when I understood something I hadn’t allowed myself to think before: Daniel had never been touched casually by a woman who wasn’t correcting or commanding him.

And somehow, that knowledge weighed on me.

That night, I lay awake longer than usual. I told myself stories — harmless ones. That I felt protective. That I was simply kind. That noticing a person did not mean crossing a line.

But rules are not broken all at once.

They crack quietly.

The next morning, I asked him to sit while we ate. A small thing. A normal thing. He hesitated before obeying, as though waiting for correction that never came.

We ate in silence. But the silence had changed.

It wasn’t empty anymore.
It was careful. Watching.

When he finished, he stood quickly, clearing his plate before I had even stood up.

“Daniel,” I said, unsure why I needed him to stop.

He turned.

“Yes, ma?”

I saw it then — not desire, not expectation — but trust. The kind of trust that doesn’t protect itself.

And in that moment, I knew the rule I had made for myself was already bending.

Not because I wanted him.
But because I had started seeing him.

The most dangerous thing I could have done.
