“THE PRIESTESS THEY CAST OUT”
EPISODE 7: “The Marked Ones”
Morning came with screams.
Not sickness.
Not déath.
Truth.
Three villagers lay on the ground at the center of Umuoya.
A hunter.
A trader.
An elder.
On each of their chests burned the same symbol—
A twisted spiral.
The sign of unpaid blōød.
The villagers gathered in terror.
“What does it mean?”
“Why them?”
“Why not the chief?!”
Amarachi arrived quietly.
One look at the marks…
And her heart sank.
She knew the symbol.
Too well.
She turned to the chief.
“You lied,” she said.
The chief’s mouth opened—
then closed.
The marked elder began to shake.
“We… we didn’t think it mattered anymore.”
The river’s voice echoed faintly in the distance.
“SPEAK.”
The hunter broke first.
“When the shrine was built…
a traveler diéd.”
Gasps.
The trader fell to his knees.
“He was wounded…
we refused him shelter.”
The elder sobbed.
“He dïed at the riverbank.
We büried him quietly.”
Silence crashed over the village.
Amarachi closed her eyes.
“You sealed the shrine with bløød,” she said.
“And blamed the gods for demanding protection.”
The villagers cried.
“We didn’t know—”
“You knew,” Amarachi cut in.
“You just chose convenience.”
The marked men screamed as the symbols burned brighter.
The river stirred.
“THE DEBT DEMANDS BALANCE.”
The chief crawled toward Amarachi.
“Please…
tell us what to do.”
Amarachi’s voice was heavy.
“There are three nights left.”
She pointed to the marked men.
“By the final night…
one truth…
one sacrifice…
or the river will choose.”
The marked men wailed.
Amarachi turned away.
But her hands trembled.
Because she knew…
The river never chooses gently.
That night,
one of the marked men tried to run—
And the earth followed him.
