The abandoned cathedral burned behind them, smoke twisting into the night sky like black serpents.
Taye could still hear the echo of Adrian’s roar inside her skull — wild, ancient, nothing human.
She had seen him fight before
…but never like that.
Never with that much rage.
Never with that much hunger.
They stopped running only when they reached an old, forgotten railway station on the edge of Remoji.
Trains no longer passed there.
Only rust, silence, and the cold wind welcomed them.
Adrian dropped to his knees.
His hands shook violently. Veins darkened under his skin. His breathing turned rough, uneven — like every inhale was torture.
“Adrian!” Taye knelt beside him. “Talk to me. Please.”
He clenched his jaw, eyes flashing a deep, violent red.
“Don’t—” he rasped. “Don’t come any closer.”
“But you’re hurt—”
“I said don’t!”
His voice shook the air, not loud but powerful, like a beast struggling not to escape.
Taye froze.
Not because she feared him…
…but because she saw pain in him, deeper than wounds.
The kind that comes from history.
From guilt.
From centuries.
She swallowed. “This is about the hunters, isn’t it?”
Adrian’s eyes finally met hers.
And just like that… all the fury vanished from his face.
Only sorrow remained.
“They weren’t always my enemies,” he whispered. “A long time ago… I was one of them.”
Taye blinked. “You? A hunter?”
He nodded slowly.
“I led the Order before Kazeem ever carried a sword. I trained them… built their codes… shaped their mission.”
“Then how did you become—”
“A monster?” he finished with a hollow laugh. “Because power is a cruel teacher.”
His eyes darkened as old memories surfaced.
“I was betrayed… cursed… turned into the very thing I had sworn to destroy.”
Taye reached for him again, gently this time.
He didn’t pull away.
“Adrian… you’re not a monster.”
“I am, Taye,” he said, voice breaking. “Tonight you saw the truth. I barely recognized myself.”
He looked at his bloodstained hands, shaking.
“If I stay near you… if the curse keeps growing…”
His throat tightened.
“I might be the one who kills you.”
Taye grabbed his face, forcing him to look at her.
“Listen to me. I don’t care what you were. I don’t care what the hunters say. I only care about who you are to me.”
His lips trembled. “And who is that?”
She breathed softly…
“…The man I trust.”
For a long second, he didn’t move.
Didn’t breathe.
Didn’t blink.
Something shifted in him — something fragile, something dangerous, something hungry.
But before he could speak, a cold metallic click echoed from the shadows.
Taye froze.
Adrian turned slowly.
Kazeem Lawal stepped forward, flanked by two hunters, silver guns raised — the moon glinting on his blade.
“Trust?” Kazeem said, smiling darkly.
“Let’s test that.”
Adrian rose to his feet…
eyes turning black as midnight.
The war had officially begun.
